Reunited in SEA!

We are now officially living in Cambodia! Our move consisted of 4 suitcases at 23 kg + 2 carry-ons at 7 kg + 2 boxes at 20 kg to Kuala Lumpur and 1 box at 30 kg to San Francisco (we are so lucky to have supportive families!).

Gabi started his big adventure at the beginning of September & I got six more weeks in Toronto.

Gabi got to explore Phnom Penh (PP) with his parents
& discovered PP’s beautiful evening glow (& touristy areas!)
He made friends with the chicken next door
And spent time with some humans too
On a visit to one of the communities his company (Okra) installed solar + battery for – these are little cricket houses!

He also got to visit London, Oxford and Reading to present his summer research for the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasting (ECMWF)

Go Tommy and Gabi! Look at those graphs!

The weeks in Toronto came with many cafe visits and afternoon beers.

My time in the Bergeron basement was fun-filled (peek my ultra-concentration face reading to the kids in French)

Even if they were a little bit sassy (esp Steph)
And very silly
There were a lot goodbyes and lots of love

And then Boom! We were both in Cambodia and it was (is) very hot. But luckily we now have access to fresh papaya.

A few things we have had to (have gotten to) learn to live without

  • Hot showers & water pressure
  • Public transportation
  • Sidewalks
  • Expensive rent
  • Expensive food & drink
  • Canadians 🙁
  • Traffic rules

A few things we now have to (get to!) live with:

  • Cheap delicious food
  • Friendly Cambodians & expats
  • A new language & culture
  • Loud construction
  • Everything in walking distance
  • HEAT. HOT HOT HOT
  • New currency (USD + Cambodian Riel for change??)
  • Quick flights to amazing places!

On the topic of quick flights to amazing places, we got to spend a long weekend in Luang Prabang for the Luang Prabang Half Marathon (which Raph, Gabi’s sister, crushed with no training).

Look at these pups!

Beautiful people in beautiful places <3
Becoming acquainted with the Mekong
and the associated cute cafes
look at this 21k champion
the markets were beautiful
and so were the wild gabis!
It was a special experience.
I will leave you with some mango sticky rice!
